The garda fraud case at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has ended with the discharge of the jury on the third day of the hearing.

Judge Kieran O'Connor discharged the jury after learning that at least three members of the jury had family holiday arrangements to start this coming weekend. He had been told earlier by prosecuting counsel Mr Patrick Gageby SC the State case would continue until at least Thursday. This would mean the case continuing into next week, though the present court term ends next Friday.

In the case, Det Garda John Ryan (36), of Newtown Park, Blessington, Co Wicklow, has pleaded not guilty to obtaining £260 from Garda Patrick Normile by falsely pretending that he owned a Nissan Micra motor engine on or about August 1994.

A new date will be set for the trial at a later hearing. The accused was remanded on continuing bail.
