A jury at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court has acquitted one of two men accused of an assault that has resulted in the victim being confined to a wheelchair.

Murray Cummings (20), Lr Kilmacud Road, Stillorgan, was found not guilty by the jury after seven hours of deliberations on day 18 of the trial and was discharged from the court by Judge Michael White.

Judge White has sent the jury of 12 men to a hotel for a second consecutive night after it failed to return a verdict in the case against the second accused, Eoin Hogan (21), Ballyogan Wood, Carrickmines.

The judge sent the jury away after it had been deliberating for a further two hours in Mr Hogan's case and announced through its foreman that it needed to continue considering the case. It will resume its deliberations this morning.
