A District Court judge has warned the banks that he has no intention of hitting debtors severely by imposing orders for hefty instalments where money is owed.

Judge Seán MacBride was dealing with a number of applications for instalment orders against debtors at a sitting in Monaghan. When dealing with one case in which Ulster Bank (Ireland) Limited was seeking an instalment of €700 per month from a debtor towards repayment of a sum in excess of €40,000, the judge said : “There is not a chance that I would grant any such amount – they can go and whistle for it”.

He added that he would be more inclined to set the figure at €100 per month, but he adjourned the application until December 12th next.
