Judge refuses request not to send 15-year-old girl to detention centre

Judge Cormac Dunne yesterday refused a request from Oberstown Girls' Centre not to send remand prisoners there.

Judge Cormac Dunne yesterday refused a request from Oberstown Girls' Centre not to send remand prisoners there.

The issue arose at the Dublin Children's Court in the case of a 15-year-old girl, who is facing charges for assault and theft.

She had also been in breach of her bail conditions leading to an application for her to be remanded in custody to Oberstown Girls' Centre.

Ms Rose Sweeney, of the Special Residential Services Board, informed the court that the detention centre had asked that the court not remand any more girls there.

However, Judge Dunne said that was an external "housekeeping matter", and the administration of places of detention did not fall within the remit of the courts.

He thanked Ms Sweeney for the information she brought to court but said the issue was a matter for the Department of Justice and not the court. He ordered that the teenage girl would be remanded in custody at the detention centre for a week.
