AN acoustic disc with the voice of James Joyce reading the Ulysses passage from Ulysses was sold for £9,775 sterling at Christie's in London yesterday.

Signed and dated "November 27th, 1924" by the author, the disc was sold to a London dealer, Mr Simon Finch. It is one of 30 copies of Joyce's only recording of Ulysses, four of which survive in institutes, including TCD.

Mr Robert Nicholson, curator of the Joyce Tower in Sandycove, said he was disappointed: "Very rarely these items surface at auctions and it's a pity that they just disappear into a void again. I would have been very pleased if funding had come forward..."

Mr Nicholson added that the museum is now hoping to acquire a first edition of Joyce's Dubliners, which is coming up for auction at Sotheby's on July 17th.
