AS foreign secretary and then chancellor he was given documents which suggested that the government had relaxed its policy on exporting arms to Iraq. In 1992, as Prime Minister, Mr Major established the Scott inquiry following the collapse of the Matrix Churchill trial.

Mr Major told the inquiry that he had no knowledge of any of the details or changes in government policy and did not remember seeing any of the relevant documents.
