Racing:Grand National-winning rider Jason Maguire won his appeal against a 10-day riding ban handed out for taking the wrong course at Wetherby last Sunday.

Maguire said he had taken evasive action to avoid the injured Harry Haynes, who was still being treated after a fall on the previous circuit.

The local stewards banned Maguire from May 3rd-12th inclusive, but the British Horseracing Authority disciplinary panel quashed the suspension on hearing his appeal.

Paul Gallagher was the other rider to take the same course as Maguire at the weekend but he elected not to appeal earlier in the week.

The panel heard evidence from Maguire, who was legally represented and also viewed video recordings of the race, concluding that Maguire had reasonable cause to decide to proceed otherwise than as indicated by the direction markers.

The finding was based on the unchallenged evidence of Maguire that he took the said decision out of concern as to the risk that horses might otherwise pass too close to the fallen jockey.
