Dublin may have had its "Chime in the Slime" and "Stiletto in the Ghetto" but Corcadorca Theatre Company is planning to mark the millennium on Leeside in a spiritual way by staging its most ambitious project to date, The Trial of Jesus.

Scripted by a Cork writer, Conal Creedon, brother of RTE's Risin' Time presenter, John Creedon, the play will involve a combination of professional actors and community groups in a open-air re-enactment of the last days of Jesus Christ.

"This millennium marks the 2,000th anniversary of the birth of Jesus Christ, arguably the most influential person in Western culture, and we've been working on the idea since last May of marking the occasion by staging a passion play," said Mr Creedon.

The play will focus on the trial, crucifixion and ascension of Jesus Christ and will be staged in the heart of Cork on St Patrick' s Hill.

"We plan to have a number of stages erected on the route, where we will stage various episodes from Christ's last few days on Earth, such as the Last Supper, and we will insert those, as it were, each time Jesus falls carrying the cross," Mr Creedon explained.

The event is supported by all Christian denominations and, according to Dyene Hanrahan of Corcadorca, it's hoped to involve community groups, as well as present a theatrical spectacle to people who don't usually go to the theatre.

So is Mr Creedon, author of the cult radio series Under the Goldie Fish, daunted by the prospect of tackling such a powerful and familiar story, where perhaps his audience will have very definite views on how it should be told?

"It was a daunting prospect, but the fact that so many people are involved - director Pat Kiernan and others from Corcadorca, as well as community groups - means it's a real collaborative effort, so I don't feel so vulnerable," he said.

"It's an exciting challenge."
