The Italian government approved new measures today aimed at tightening security across Italy after the London bomb attacks, Environment Minister Altero Matteoli said.

Officials said this week the government wanted to make it easier to detain and expel suspects, improve surveillance of the Internet and boost penalties for terror-related crimes.

Italy has not suffered the type of attacks by Islamist militants that have hit Britain, Spain and the United States, but there have been a series of false bomb threats in recent months.
