Israeli warplanes bombed an area by the Gaza Strip's border with Egypt today, several hours after a rocket fired from the coastal territory struck inside an Israeli town, Palestinian witnesses said.

There were no immediate reports of casualties from the air strike, which appeared to have targeted tunnels Israel says are used to smuggle weapons into Gaza from neighbouring Egypt.

The Israeli military had no immediate comment.

Earlier a rocket fired from Gaza damaged a home in the southern Israeli town of Sderot, causing no injury. There were no claims of responsibility for the rocket fire issued by any militant groups based in Hamas-ruled Gaza.

The rocket was the first to strike inside an Israeli town in several weeks. Rocket fire from Gaza had dropped since a January 18 truce that ended Israel's 22-day offensive against Gaza's Islamic militants.

An Israeli air strike responding to mortar fire from Gaza killed two Palestinians on May 2nd. That attack also targeted tunnels beneath the Gaza-Egypt border.
