An Israeli soldier shot dead an Arab man who attacked him with an axe at the gate of an army base today, a military source said.
The military was investigating the incident near Amiad in northern Israel's Galilee and the soldier was taken to Rebecca Sieff Hospital in nearby Safed, the source said.
The Haaretz daily newspaper's Web site said it appeared the attacker was an Israeli Arab citizen.
Troops were checking a suspicious bag he had been carrying, the source said.
