Israeli police have dropped the investigation into seven men suspected by Switzerland of having plotted the kidnapping of the 12-year-old heiress to Aristotle Onassis.

No evidence has been found that the seven, among them former top agents in the Shin Bet security service, were involved in wrongdoing, said a police spokeswoman.

The suspects were private investigators who had trailed Aristotle Onassis's granddaughter, Athena Roussel (12), and her father, Thierry Roussel, as part of a battle over control of the girl's trust fund. They had been hired by the Greek trustees to run surveillance on Roussel, police said. Athena Roussel stands to inherit £1.5 billion when she reaches 18.

A Swiss judge investigating suspicions that there was an attempt to kidnap Athena is sceptical of the Israeli version.
