A carpenter from Co Meath who was acquitted of murder in San Francisco yesterday is to remain in prison pending possible further charges.

Mr William Monaghan (27) was found not guilty by a jury of eight women and four men of murdering Swiss animator Lionel Voillat by throwing him into San Francisco bay during a Halloween boat party after Mr Voillat struck him.

Witnesses testified during a preliminary hearing that Mr Monaghan and Mr Voillat had argued about a conversation Mr Monaghan had with Mr Voillat's girlfriend moments before the Swiss man went over the side of the boat on thenight of October 26th last year.

Prosecution and defence lawyers failed to reach an agreement today on whether he should face manslaughter charges.

He will remain in a San Francisco prison at least until June 23rd, after lawyers agreed to bring the case back before the court in an attempt to find a resolution.
