Irishman on Dutch drugs charge

An Irishman has been remanded in custody in The Netherlands on drugs and weapons offences.

An Irishman has been remanded in custody in The Netherlands on drugs and weapons offences.

Three people arrested with Freddie Thompson (25), including his girlfriend, were freed after three days, but they remain suspects, according to Dutch police.

Mr Thompson, from Drimnagh, Dublin, was brought before a magistrate in Rotterdam yesterday where he was charged with possession of 7kg of cocaine and six handguns.

The drugs and weapons were found in a flat being used by Mr Thompson after police swooped late on Friday night on the apartment complex in a middle-class Rotterdam suburb.

His girlfriend, who is 23 and from Dublin, and a 51-year-old man and a 41-year-old woman, said to be Irish but with an address in Hull, were freed yesterday. The public prosecutor's office had asked the court to hold them for a further three days.

"They are not allowed to leave the country, they are still suspects in the case and they have to make themselves available for questioning during the investigation," said a spokeswoman for Rotterdam Public Prosecutors office.

There has been no request from Ireland for Mr Thompson's extradition, spokeswoman Yeichien de Graaf said. It is going to take a considerable time to complete the investigation, she said.

Rotterdam police spokesman Gert de Jong added: "This is a Dutch case, there was information from Ireland concerning these people's activities and that they were suspected of having large amounts of drugs and weapons, but there was no Irish police involvement beyond that in their arrests."
