An Irishman deported from Thailand after serving eight years for murder is due to fly back to Dublin today.

Colin Martin, (43), from Carrickmacoss, Co Monaghan, was jailed in 1997 for the murder of a New Zealand ship captain. He served most of his sentence in the notorious Klongprem Central Prison, known as the "Bangkok Hilton."

A spokeswoman for the Department of Foreign Affairs said Martin had received assistance from the Irish Consulate in Thailand but declined to give any further details.

Martin has always maintained his innocence, saying he was forced to confess to the murder after being tortured by police.
