An Irish journalist accredited to the United Nations mission in East Timor, Mr Sean Steele, was attacked by forces opposed to its independence from Indonesia, the Department of Foreign Affairs said last night. The Department gave no details of the nature of the attack but said Mr Steele was covering the activities of student groups who favour East Timorese independence. A Department spokesman said last night Mr Steele was safe in the UN Mission in Dili.
