An Irish woman was revealed last night to be among five people killed in a minibus crash in north-western Croatia on Friday.

Another Irish tourist was injured in the crash near the village of Medaki, on the Istrian peninsula but her condition is not thought to be life-threatening.

It is understood Belgian tourists and the Croatian driver were among the fatalities when the bus collided with a truck on Friday afternoon, around 90 miles from the capital, Zagreb.

The Department of Foreign Affairs confirmed two Irish citizens were involved in the accident but said it was awaiting further details about their conditions.

A spokeswoman said: "We can confirm that one woman was killed and another was seriously injured," said a spokesperson. "We are in contact with the families and offering consular assistance. No further personal details can be released at this stage."

Officials in Dublin have been briefed on the accident by consular staff from the Irish Embassy in Ljubljana, Slovenia.

The tourists were on a day trip from the seaside resort of Pula to Porec at the time of the tragedy. They were also due to cross the border into Slovenia to see the famous caves at Postojna.

Croatia has become an increasingly popular destination for Irish tourists, with an estimated 40,000 people travelling there last year.

It was earlier feared that as many as three Irish tourists had been killed.
