Iranians living in Ireland are due to hold a demonstration outside the Iranian embassy in Dublin today to call for a “fair, just and independent” election in the country.
Organisers said the protest, which was not affiliated with any political group, was being held to press for those who were arrested in Iran in this week’s post-election turmoil to be freed and to support the right of people in Iran to freedom of expression.
They would also call for a “fair, just and independent election”.
A second demonstration is due to take place at the embassy in Blackrock on Saturday. Organised by Hands Off the People of Iran (HOPI), a campaigning group, it aims to show “solidarity with the masses in Iran who have taken to the streets in outrage against the rigged elections”.
“We call for immediate, unconditional release of all prisoners arrested and for the withdrawal of state forces from the streets,” said Anne McShane of HOPI Ireland.
A spokeswoman for the Iranian embassy declined to comment on the protests.
