A Co Laois man has drowned while holidaying in New Zealand.

A Co Laois man has drowned while holidaying in New Zealand.

Eoin Doran (21), from Camross, Mountrath, was one of a group of six friends who went swimming in a hot stream off the Waikato River near Taupo on the North Island yesterday.

Police said Mr Doran was swept away when he strayed into deeper waters.

Police divers later recovered hisbody from the river several hours later.

Mr Doran had been in New Zealand for two weeks. He was a member of the Camross team that won the Laois Under 21 club championship last month. He is a brother of senior county hurler Tadhg Doran.

The Department of Affairs said its consulate in New Zealand and its embassy in Australia were assisting the Doran family.
