The Islamic Foundation of Ireland has strongly condemned yesterday's terrorist attacks on New York and Washington.

The head of the Islamic Foundation of Ireland Mr Imam Al Hussein said the attack was "a tragedy for America and the whole world." Mr Hussein said the Islamic community in Ireland "strongly condemned the terrorist act against innocent civilians."
Mr Hussein said many people here and elsewhere were "jumping to conclusions" as to who might be responsible. He said when it became clear who the perpetrators were the Islamic Foundation would issue a fuller statement.

The condemnation was echoed by the Islmic Cultural Centre of Ireland who called on the US administration and the media not to be hasty in allocating blame.
They said in a statement they "share the sadness felt by Irish people because of this horrible act".
Meanwhile in a statement issued jointly by the Catholic Church, Church of Ireland, Presbyterian and Methodist Churches, leaders expressed their "shock and abhorrence... over the deep tragedy which has visited the USA through the unbelievable terrorist attacks which we unreservedly condemn."
The Archbishop of Dublin Cardinal Desmond Connell expressed his "profound dismay at the terrible events" and said he was conscious that many Irish families may have been directly involved in the tragedy. The Archbishop extended his "particular sympathy and the promise of my prayers to them."
Cardinal Connell will celebrate Mass in the Pro-Cathedral at 12.30 p.m. on Sunday next for those who have been killed or injured, and their families.
