DISCUSSIONS between unions and management at Irish Cement will continue next week after it was announced 135 jobs are to be lost.
Seventy jobs are to go at its facility in Limerick, with a further 65 in Platin, Co Meath. The job losses follow voluntary redundancies of 30 per cent of the workforce announced last year.
According to Irish Cement, the restructuring plan is necessary due to a fall off in demand. In a statement yesterday, the company said details of the restructuring would be “subject to further dialogue with both unions and employees” .
Siptu’s Karan O’Loughlin said it was hard to see why parent company CRH was making “these harsh decisions”. “This is a very harsh approach for a company that traditionally had a great degree of respect and engagement with their employees,” she said.
