Young man dies and six injured in Galway crash

Three-car collision claims life of 20-year-old motorist and seriously injures SUV driver

A young man died and six people were injured in a multi-car collision near the Galway-Mayo border on Monday.

Gardaí say a 20-year-old man suffered fatal injuries when the car he was driving collided with an SUV and another car on the R337 at Cordarragh, Headford at about 2pm on Monday afternoon.

The man was pronounced dead at the scene and his body was later removed to University Hospital Galway.

Six others sustained injuries in the large collision, which caused the closure of the Headford to Ballinrobe road for much of Monday.

Serious condition

The driver of the 4x4 vehicle is believed to be in a serious condition in University Hospital Galway.

A passenger in that vehicle was also wounded, as were the four occupants of the third car. The dead man was travelling alone, according to gardaí.

An investigation has been launched.

It is believed that at least two of those involved are from the locality.

Fianna Fáil councillor Mary Hoade said people in the area are "in shock" following the incident.
