Over 11,000 cycling for charity in Ring of Kerry

Munster’s biggest charity event is underway in Kerry since shortly before dawn. Traffic diversions are in place throughout the 180km Ring of Kerry as over 11,000 cyclists complete the gruelling and scenic route for various charities.

Now in its 32nd year, the Ring of Kerry cycle sells out within hours of opening registration. Hundreds of cyclists have arrived from abroad and accommodation in Kenmare and Killarney is booked to capacity.

One group of cyclists left this morning at 4.30am, although the bulk began the route from Killarney to Cahersiveen to Sneem via Kenmare and back at around 7.30am.

The route is fully marshalled and signs to encourage cyclists to keep going dot the steepest of hills – “Are you going to be sore or sorry tomorrow? “ screams from one of the steepest of the inclines between Kenmare and Moll’s Gap on the last leg before the down hill run to Killarney.

Over 23,000 sandwiches will be distributed along with thousands of bananas and brack.

The event finishes with a street party in Killarney and on Sunday 35,000 people will arrive in the town for the Munster Final clash between Cork and Kerry.

Over a million euro will be raised this year and it will go to various nominated charities.
