A young Irish artist who has been chosen by US giant Marvel Comics as their main artist on such as titles as Spider-Man, Avengers and X-Men has been chosen as Cork Person of the Month for July.

Will Sliney, from Ballycotton in East Cork, has worked for some of the biggest illustration companies in the world of animation, storyboards and video games since his graduation from a multi-media course at Cork Institute of Technology.

“Completely shocked and so honoured by this,” tweeted Mr Sliney after he was chosen as Cork Person of the Month, in recognition of his work on the Amazing Spider-Man as well as on Star Wars, Mac Gyver and Jim Henson’s Farscape.

The Legend of Cu Chulainn, the first in a Celtic Warriors trilogy by Mr Sliney, has been published by O’Brien Press and featured on The Irish Times best sellers list. A sequel on Fionn Mac Cumhaill is due to follow shortly.

Mr Sliney’s Cork Legends mural on a wall at the Grand Parade/South Mall junction has garnered a lot of praise for his depictions of celebrated Corkonians such as Jack Lynch, Michael Collins, Roy Keane, Rory Gallagher, Sonia O’Sullivan and Christy Ring.
