GAA official dies in single car crash in Galway

Galway's GAA community is in mourning following the death of an official in a single car crash in Galway city.

Michael O'Neill (60), originally from Tuam, died following the incident at about 10pm on Tuesday night.

It is believed the father-of-two suffered a heart attack before his vehicle crashed into a wall at the Liosbán Industrial Estate on the Tuam Road.

Mr O'Neill was a former goalkeeper with Tuam Stars and a founding member of the St James' club.

He was secretary of the Galway juvenile football board from 1987-95, as well as a manager of club teams and the Galway U-16 team.

Mr O’Neill was also youth officer of Galway county GAA board.

The secretary of the Galway GAA football committee Seamus O’Grady said Mr O’Neill’s death had shocked the county.

“He was an extremely popular and helpful man who gave dedicated service to the GAA and anything else he was involved in. It is devastating news,” Mr O’Grady said.

Mr O’Neill is survived by his wife Claire, his son Anthony and his daughter Andrea.
