Former antiques dealer charged with indecently assaulting boy

Man (81) remanded in custody after being charged with 12 counts

An 81-year-old former antiques and firearms dealer has been remanded in custody after he was charged with indecently assaulting a 12-year-old boy in Co Cork over 40 years ago.

Patrick Bassett was charged with 12 counts of indecently assaulting the young boy at an address in Glanmire in Co Cork on various dates between 1968 and 1970.

Sgt Anna Maria Guiney gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution and told the court that Mr Bassett made no reply to any of the 12 charges when they were put to him after caution.

Insp Mary King told the court that the DPP had directed that Mr Bassett of the Farmhouse, Sarsfield Court, Glanmire, should be tried on indictment at Circuit Court level.

Defence solicitor Joe Cuddigan said that he was not applying for bail for his client and Judge Con O'Leary remanded Mr Bassett in custody to appear in court again on September 20th 2016.
