Donnelly critical of funding cuts for third-level institutions

Ireland could not aspire to being a global leader in technology while halving the level of funding per student, Independent TD Stephen Donnelly said.

He said last week’s web summit demonstrated the huge opportunities for Ireland in digital technology.

“It is very important for our economic recovery and future prosperity that we are a global leader in technology and, critically, are recognised as such internationally,” he added.

“Unfortunately, a very important piece of Government policy is putting this at risk: the continued reduction in funding to third-level institutions such as colleges and universities.”

Mr Donnelly said Government funding this year for third-level institutions would fall by €25 million. He said Ireland needed engineers and science graduates. They had to be the best in the world.
