IRAQ: Iraq's prime minister Mr Iyad Allawi has denied claims that he executed up to six insurgents at a Baghdad police station days before the US handed power over to his interim government.

The claims, published by the the Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, are made by two people who allege they witnessed the killings. According to the newspapers, the witnesses said they saw the prisoners who were handcuffed and blindfolded lined up against a wall in a cell block at the Al-Amariyah security centre. Mr Allwai then shot each man in the head as Iraqi policemen and four Americans from his personal security team watched.

The prime minister's office denied the witness accounts saying he had never visited the centre and he did not carry a gun.
