An investigation is underway following the death of a patient three days after he received burns at Tullamore General Hospital in Co Offaly.

The man (61) was reported missing from his bed at the hospital at 9 p.m. on Tuesday according to Midland Health Board.

Staff at the hospital carried out a search of the premises and he was found 4 hours later. The man had burn injuries from being close to hot pipes.

He was transferred to the adult burns unit at St. James's Hospital, Dublin on Wednesday afternoon. He died at 10.30 a.m. yesterday.
