The service support subsidiary of computer chip giant Intel is to create 80 jobs at its R&D facility in the Shannon Free Zone.

Intel Communications Europe (ICE) was established in the zone in 1999 and employs over 120 people - most of whom are software or hardware engineers.

The jobs announcement was made by Minister for Enterprise Micheál Martin, who said the zone's proximity to the University of Limerick and ease of access offered by Shannon airport influenced Intel's decision to award the jobs to Ireland.

Mr Martin said Ireland's economic prospects depend on creating a culture of scientific and technological innovation, and on developing a high level of collaboration and linkage in research and development between academia and business.
