A Garda inquiry has been launched into allegations of sexual abuse at a former Brothers of Charity centre in Co Waterford.

A Garda inquiry has been launched into allegations of sexual abuse at a former Brothers of Charity centre in Co Waterford.

St Michael's Centre, Belmont Park, Ferrybank was closed in 1990. It was opened as a home for adults with intellectual disabilities in 1966.

It is understood that a number of allegations were made by former residents at the centre and the investigation has been ongoing for some weeks.

Gardaí confirmed this afternoon they were investigating allegations of sexual abuse by a number of members of a religious order in Co Waterford.

A Garda spokesman refused to be drawn on the nature of the allegations or how many people were involved.

The Brothers of Charity, South Eastern Region, said in a statement this afternoon that they are co-operating fully with the investigation.
