Iarnrod Eireann and gardai in Co Galway are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a young man who was hit by the Dublin-Galway train last night.

He died at the scene of the accident, which occurred at Derrydonnell, between Athenry and Oranmore at about 7.30 p.m. A spokesman for Iarnrod Eireann said the 16.55 Dublin-Galway train was passing through what is known locally as Sullivan's Crossing when the collision occurred. The spokesman said Iarnrod Eireann wished to extend sincere sympathy to the man's relatives.

It is understood the accident was witnessed by young people in the vicinity.

His name was not released last night until all relatives had been informed.
