A baby boy has been seriously injured in a car crash in Co Longford.

A baby boy has been seriously injured in a car crash in Co Longford.

Gardaí said the infant, who is believed to be about six months old, was travelling in the car with three adults and three other children.

The crash happened at about 1.30pm on the R392 at Ballymahon, about 1.5km from Lanesborough. No other vehicle was involved.

All seven were rushed to the Midland Regional Hospital in Mullingar, where the boy's condition is said to be serious.

The others are not believed to have suffered life-threatening injures.

Motorists are warned that the road will be closed until at least 8pm as collision investigators examine the scene.

Gardaí have appealed for witnesses and diversions are in place.
