The early-morning accident occurred when two trains bound from Jakarta to Surabaya, Indonesia's second city, collided, a police official at Gubug near the crash site said.Hundreds of passengers had been evacuated from the scene, and the busy line closed to all traffic.One of the locomotives derailed and plunged into a paddy field, the police official said.Transportation Minister Hatta Radjasa, who was heading for the scene, said the accident might have been due to "human errors".
Train crashes and other transport accidents are relatively frequent in Indonesia, where infrastructure has strained to keep pace with population and economic growth.
