Indonesian President Mr Abdurrahman Wahid today refused to appear before a parliamentary team inquiring into two financial scandals linked to him.

Mr Wahid has repeatedly said the 50-member team had no right to make him appear for questioning over the two scandals.

His spokesman said it was unclear if Mr Wahid would offer to submit written answers to the team, which had asked the president to appear on Wednesday.

The inquiry into the two scandals, which involve a total of $6.1 million, could lead to impeachment proceedings if the team finds evidence of criminal activity on Mr Wahid's part.
