A man described as a disgruntled employee opened fire inside an Indiana plastics factory today, killing one and wounding six before killing himself, police said.

Heavily armed officers surrounded the Nu-Wood Decorative Millwork building in a tense standoff that lasted nearly two hours as worried family members arrived amid initial reports as many 35 people might have been shot.

But police entered the building to find the gunman dead. The incident was the latest of a series of workplace shootings in the United States that have taken dozens of lives.

Goshen Police Chief Terry Schollian told a news conference an employee inside the factory called a police emergency line to report the shooting.

He said most of the workers were able to flee when the shooting started but one man hid in an office and police remained in contact with him by telephone until they entered the building.

Mr Schollian said one factory worker died in the attack and the gunman turned a weapon, apparently a shotgun, on himself. He said no identities would be released until later.

The Goshen Newsquoted a witness as saying the gunman got into an argument with a co-worker and was then ordered to take a couple of days off. It reported he made a threat at that time and returned about three-and-a-half hours later with a gun.
