Delhi - India said yesterday that militants had withdrawn or were pulling back from all areas of occupation inside Indian-held Kashmir on the eve of today's deadline for a full retreat.

"In Batalik, Kaksar and Drass sectors, our troops have occupied dominating heights along the Line of Control (LoC) barring two heights in the Drass sector from where the enemy has also commenced withdrawal," Col Bikram Singh said.

"These heights will be occupied shortly. In Mushkoh sector withdrawal is going on," he said. India's army and air force battled for two months to dislodge the intruders who New Delhi says are Pakistani troops and Muslim militants. Pakistan says they are freedom fighters against Indian rule in the disputed Himalayan region.
