Twelve years for €11.5m drug haul

A cocaine addict who was caught with the then largest single seizure of heroin in the history of the State has been given a 12-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Stephen Carlile (23), Áras na Cluaine, Nangor Road, Clondalkin, got involved in the operation because his cocaine addiction had run him into massive debt. He was paid €400 a week to mind almost €11.5 million worth of heroin and cannabis, along with a stash of guns and ammunition.

The father of one was also paid the €1,100 monthly rent on the apartment, described by the Garda as "effectively a drug warehouse", where the heroin was prepared for sale.

Insp Gerard Delmar said the people who hired Carlile threatened him that if the drugs were confiscated, he would be killed or, if he ran away, his family would be killed.

Carlile pleaded guilty to possession of heroin valued at over €10.6 million, cannabis valued at €839,000, a machine pistol, 1,609 rounds of a variety of ammunition, four magazine pistols and two silencers at the apartment on October 24th, 2006.

His defence said a psychiatric report indicated Carlile suffered from attention deficit hyperactivty disorder (ADHD). It suggested if he had received treatment when it was needed, "he wouldn't find himself in the position he does today".

Driver jailed over teenagers' deaths

A teenager who was the driver of a car in which his girlfriend and her stepsister were killed was jailed for three years at Limerick Circuit Court after he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving that caused the deaths of the two teenagers.

The fatal crash happened on the outskirts of Galbally, Co Limerick, early on July 15th, 2006, when Patrick Russell (19), Oliver Plunkett Terrace, Ballylanders, Co Limerick, lost control of the car he was driving.

Leanne Miller died at the scene and his girlfriend, Robyn O'Riordan (both 15), died the following day in hospital.

Heroin addict guilty of burglary

A chronic heroin addict who chased a 13-year-old boy wielding a knife and hammer and "terrorised" the boy's sisters during a burglary has been given a 13-year sentence at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court.

Mervin White (27), Corduff Park, Blanchardstown, also pleaded guilty to five counts of robbery and assisting another in burning a handbag that he knew had been taken in the course of a robbery between May and October 2006.

Judge Katherine Delahunt said these were serious offences and imposed consecutive sentences totalling 13 years, but suspended the final three years.
