Council issues alert following return of algae

Warning notices have been erected along the shoreline of the River Shannon's largest lake, Lough Derg, after the return of a toxic algal bloom.

North Tipperary County Council has erected warning signs at all the amenity areas along shores of the lake bordering the local authority area after the re-appearance of the blue-green algae, which can cause skin rashes in humans and prove fatal to dogs.

The council described the move as "precautionary".

The appearance of the algal bloom has been brought about by too much phosphate in the lake combined with warmer water temperatures.

Stab-accused is remanded

A 33-year-old man has been remanded in custody charged in connection with the stabbing of another man in Galway last week.

Billy McGinley, Claremont Park, Rahoon, Galway, is charged with assaulting Darren Johnston, causing him harm at Claremont Park, Rahoon, Galway, on September 3rd.

Mr McGinley was remanded in custody to appear before Harristown District Court on September 19th.

Man questioned over teen shooting

A 27-YEAR-OLD man arrested on Wednesday in connection with the shooting of a teenage girl at a halting site in Waterford city, was still being questioned by gardaí last night .

He was being held at Ballybricken Garda station.
