Man wanted on arms charges

The High Court has issued a bench warrant for the arrest of a Co Louth man wanted in Lithuania on weapons and terrorism charges. The Lithuanian authorities are seeking the extradition of Liam Campbell (46), Upper Faughart, Dundalk, whom they allege was involved in a conspiracy to obtain weapons, ammunition and explosive substances in the Baltic republic between the end of 2006 and during 2007.

Yesterday, Mr Justice Michael Peart issued a bench warrant after being informed Mr Campbell was not present in court as required under the terms of his bail. Remy Farrell, for Campbell, said his client was not in court because he was detained in Northern Ireland on foot of a European Arrest Warrant from Lithuania on the same charges.

A young carpenter who suffered very servere injuries and is paraplegic after being allegedly blown off a trailer carrying wood has secured an estimated €2.7 million in settlement of his High Court action. Philip Drumm (26), Hillview Cottage, Derrylin, Co Fermanagh had brought his claim against River View Timber Frame Systems Limited; Séamus Gillan Trading as S/K Gillan; and Midtown Property Development Limited. The defendants all denied liability. After day long talks between the sides, Liam Reidy SC, for Mr Drumm, told Mr Justice John Quirke yesterday the case had been settled and the proceedings could be struck out.

Citroen car dealers fined

A Wexford motor business consultant has been given a nine-month suspended prison sentence and fined €2,000, and a leading company has been fined €35,000 for their roles in a Citroen price-fixing cartel.

Bernard Byrne (47) was Dublin representative of the Citroen Dealers’ Association which illegally set a minimum selling price among its members for Citroen vehicles and imposed a IR£1,000 fine on dealers who sold below this standard.Byrne, of Gannon’s Valley, Tara Hill, Gorey pleaded guilty to preventing, restricting or distorting competition by agreeing to fix the sale price of Citroen vehicles between September 2000 and May 2002. Finglas Motors M50 Ltd, with an address at Merville Road, Stillorgan, pleaded guilty to similar charges between the same dates.
