Meeting on taking part in recreation

Ways of encouraging greater participation in recreational activities in Co Limerick are to be discussed at a public meeting in Adare next month.

It is part of an extensive consultation programme announced by Limerick County Development Board yesterday. A multi-agency steering group is overseeing the development of the strategy for 2009-2013.

Dara McGuigan, administrative officer with the Limerick County Development Board, said the strategy would focus on specific groups such as children, youth, older adults and people with a disability, as well as areas of disadvantage.

Porter tied up in raid on hotel

Gardaí are searching for three raiders after a night porter was tied up and the contents of a hotel safe were stolen in Co Carlow.

The three men got away with an undisclosed sum of cash from the Lord Bagenal Inn at Leighlinbridge shortly before 5am yesterday.

The raiders made there getaway in the porter’s car, a silver Renault Megan, which was abandoned in the town.

Yesterday’s burglary was the second raid on the Carlow hotel in the last three months. The stolen vehicle is being examined by gardaí at Carlow who are seeking the public’s assistance as part of their investigations.

Union warns Element Six of strike

Union representatives at Element Six (DeBeers) have written to the company warning that it will be issued with one week’s notice of industrial action if it takes any steps to implement a redundancy package without agreement.

Shop stewards at the company in Shannon, Co Clare, met union leaders yesterday to decide on the implementation of official industrial action, which workers voted on last week.

Element Six has refused to negotiate the contents of a redundancy package for more than 200 workers who are set to lose their jobs.
