Ferris defends prison pick-up

Sinn Féin TD Martin Ferris has defended his decision to collect Pearse McCauley and Kevin Walsh from prison on their release last week after completing sentences for the killing of Det Garda Jerry McCabe.

Mr Ferris said there was a proposal that the men’s families and supporters should collect them from Castlerea Prison but this idea was rejected. “We thought it would be triumphalist, so I agreed to collect them,” the Kerry TD said at a party meeting in Navan, Co Meath.
