35 new high-tech jobs for Galway

A major US technology company is to set up in Galway as part of the Government's drive to create a "smart economy", writes Lorna Siggins.

Tánaiste and Minister for Enterprise Mary Coughlan is expected to make the announcement this week that some 35 new jobs will be created in the business, which will be located at the IDA business park in Mervue, Galway.

Job losses (2,212) almost doubled in Galway from January to June, with 2,212 people losing their jobs, compared to the figures for the first half of 2008.

Body taken from sea in Clare

Gardaí in Clare were last night trying to identify the body of a man which was recovered from the sea at the Cliffs of Moher which may have been in the water for up to three weeks.The partially clothed body was spotted at around 6pm by two French tourists who were walking along the 700 foot high cliffs close to O’Brien’s Tower.

Members of the Doolin unit of the Irish Coast Guard were alerted and the body was recovered at around 7pm.

Gardaí believe the man was in his late 20’s to early 30’s.

Youth to face court on stabbing

A teenager is to appear in court this morning in connection with the stabbing of a garda in Mayo.

The youth was arrested at the scene in Westport where 32-year-old Garda Daryl Mullen was injured. The teenager was taken to Westport Garda station, where he was charged.

He is due to appear at Mullingar District Court at 10.30am this morning.Garda Mullen remains in intensive care at Mayo General Hospital and his condition is described as stable.

Muhammad Ali to visit Ennis

Legendary boxer Muhammad Ali has formally accepted an invitation to visit his Irish ancestral home in Ennis, Co Clare, next month and will become the first person ever to be made an honorary freeman of the town.Following a meeting held in Ennis on Saturday, Ali’s representatives confirmed that the three-time world champion will visit the town on the afternoon of Tuesday September 1st next.

Kildare death ‘not suspicious’

Gardaí have said the death of a man in Kildare is no longer being treated as suspicious.The man, who has not been named, was discovered in a house in the Oakglade Estate on the Blessington Road in Naas. He was in his mid-30s and was originally from eastern Europe. His body was discovered at 10am yesterday.

Attempted to abduct children

An Irishman who tried to abduct a young girl and boy in his van outside schools in Wolverhampton has been jailed for three years.

Patrick Sheridan, a 62-year-old door-to-door sofa salesman, tried to lure the 12-year-old boy into his van with offers of sweets on April 1st and targeted the 11-year-old girl as she left school on October 7th, 2008.

Flare mix-up in lifeboat call-out

A lifeboat was launched off the west Cork coast yesterday after a rocket flare was mistaken for a distress signal. The RNLI Baltimore inshore lifeboat, Bessie, was called to the assistance of two kayakers at Caseys Cove, Church Strand, in Baltimore.

“An onlooker who saw the boys in the water and the flare, thinking that it was a distress alert, contacted the Coastguard immediately,” said a spokesman.

“Abandoned rockets and flares can be very dangerous and should be reported immediately to the authorities so that they can be disposed of safely and without causing undue distress to the general public.”
