Sentence on rapist reduced by two years

A Georgian man who raped a Polish woman on her second night in Ireland has had his 10-year prison sentence conditionally reduced to eight years by the Court of Criminal Appeal.

The court suspended the final two years of the sentence imposed on Vasile Vardoshilli (38) on grounds including that the victim had requested he should not, for the sake of his wife and family, receive a lengthy sentence. Vardoshilli, a father of three with an address at Greenville Place, Cork, was found guilty in 2007 of raping, falsely imprisoning and assaulting the woman in Killarney in August 2004.

Term for having firearms appealed

The Director of Public Prosecutions has successfully appealed against the leniency of sentences imposed, in separate cases, on two men for having firearms.

The Court of Criminal Appeal yesterday increased from four to five years the sentence imposed on Denis Dwyer, Jobstown, Tallaght, and, in a separate case, increased from three-and-a-half to six years the term imposed on Owen Clail, Stanhope Street, Dublin.

Drugs death inquest deferred

Further charges may be considered following the death of an 18-year-old woman who was found collapsed in a Dublin hotel.

Lauren Keech of Albert College Drive, Dublin 9, collapsed at the Ardmore Hotel, Finglas, early on December 23rd, 2007. Her death is drug related.

One person has been charged with the supply of drugs arising out of the Garda investigation. Insp Mel Smyth told a “for mention” hearing of the inquest into Ms Keech’s death yesterday that other charges may be considered. The inquest was adjourned to April.
