DPP is elected president of global prosecutors association

The Director of Public Prosecutions has been elected as president of the International Association of Prosecutors. James Hamilton succeeds François Falletti, prosecutor general of the Court of Appeal of Paris, and will serve three years.

His predecessor as DPP, Eamonn Barnes, was president of the association from 1996-1999.

The body is the only worldwide organisation of prosecutors and is committed to setting and raising standards of professional conduct and ethics for prosecutors worldwide.

It was established in June 1995 at the United Nations offices in Vienna, prompted by the rapid growth in serious transnational crime, particularly drug-trafficking, money laundering and fraud. It was felt there was a need for greater international co-operation between prosecutors and for greater speed and efficiency in mutual assistance.

Man charged with 30-year-old murder

A 54-year-old man has been charged with the murder of an RUC reserve constable in Derry almost 30 years ago.

The charge relates to the IRA murder of John Proctor, a 25-year-old constable who was shot dead outside the mid-Ulster hospital in Magherafelt after visiting his wife and newborn baby son.

The 54-year-old man will appear before Derry magistrates court today.

Three Dublin men appear in court

Three Dublin men were brought before the Special Criminal Court last night where two of them were charged with IRA membership and the third with unlawful possession of a firearm. Declan Geraghty (27), of Downpatrick Road, Crumlin, and Stephen O'Shaughnessy (30), of Avonbeg Gardens, Tallaght, were both charged with membership of an unlawful organisation. Stephen McGowan (33), of Westbourne Avenue, Clondalkin, was charged with having a firearm and ammunition at his home.

Carrick-on-Shannon wins towns award

Carrick-on-Shannon, Co Leitrim, has won a prestigious gold medal at the 2010 Entente Florale awards in Italy.

Entente Florale Europe was set up 25 years ago to encourage the greening of towns and villages.
