Trial of four Dublin gardaí for assault and trespass begins today

The Dublin Circuit Criminal Court trial of four gardaí charged with assault, forcible entry and trespass in the city two years ago will begin this morning.

Gardaí Seán O’Leary, Eoin Murtagh, Alan Conlon and Claire Delaney have pleaded not guilty to forcing entry to a premises at Basin Street Upper, entering as a trespasser and assaulting Owen Gaffney on February 17th, 2008. They also pleaded not guilty to the false imprisonment of Fidelma Gaffney.

The gardaí are based in Kilmainham and Kevin Street.

The trial, before Judge Desmond Hogan, is expected to last up to four weeks.

Hogan to rule on Limerick borders

An announcement on Limerick council boundaries is expected to be made today by Minister for the Environment Phil Hogan.Two local authorities govern Limerick city and county while Clare County Council governs areas on the north of the river Shannon on the city outskirts.

A joint authority is the preferred option of Limerick County Council while Limerick City Council favours an extension to the city boundary.

Clare council is reluctant to allow Limerick to govern any part of southeast Clare.

Trial of man for jewellery robbery

The trial has begun of a man accused of carrying out a €1.2 million jewellery robbery at Dundrum Town Centre, Co Dublin.

Ian Maloney (24), Cashel Road, Crumlin, is accused of entering a jewellers with a sawn-off shotgun and pointing it at staff while his partner filled a bin bag with jewellery and watches.

He has pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to robbery and possession of a shotgun and a sawn-off shotgun at Paul Sheeran Jewellers in September 2008.

Garda injured on duty gets €59,530

A garda has been awarded €59,530 damages as a result of injuries received while making an arrest in June 2000. Garda Martina Gallagher (38) had been very brave in wrestling with a bottle-throwing drunk in Dublin, a High Court judge said yesterday. Ms Justice Mary Irvine heard how Garda Gallagher was punched in the side as she struggled to take a glass bottle from a man who had already thrown a bottle at shoppers.
