Man held after knives found at airport

A man has been questioned by gardaí after he was discovered passing through Dublin airport on Tuesday with knives and unidentified liquid in his hand luggage which he had failed to declare. The man is in his 40s and from Algeria.

The items were found at the security check as he was preparing to board an aircraft for France. He was taken for questioning to Santry Garda station. He now faces criminal charges.

Body of Donegal youth found

The body of missing student Darren McGinley (19) was taken yesterday from the River Swilly in Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

The discovery ended a four-day search of marshes and building sites after he was reported missing last Saturday. He was found in the river at the rear of student apartments where he stayed while studying at Letterkenny vocational school.

Swords shooting investigated

Gardaí are investigating a shooting in Swords, Co Dublin, on Tuesday night. Two shots were fired at the living room window of a house on Castleview Row at about 11.15pm.

Nobody was injured.

Hain orders man's return to prison

Secretary of State for Northern Ireland Peter Hain last night ordered that a remand prisoner at Maghaberry prison should be returned to custody to serve out the remainder of a life sentence imposed on him for a 1985 murder.

Mr Hain had been asked to decide if Séamus Mullan (52), Garvagh, Co Derry, had breached the conditions of his early release on licence after he was freed in 1998.

Mullan, a farmer, had been refused bail in the High Court in Belfast on Monday four days after he had been remanded in custody from the Magistrates Court in Derry on charges linked to money-laundering and possessing 240,000 illegal cigarettes.

Group to foster Irish culture in US

Actor Gabriel Byrne has been appointed chairman of a working group set up to develop an Irish cultural centre in New York.

Launched by Minister for Arts John O'Donoghue yesterday, the working group will aim to develop the cultural centre from an infrastructural perspective.

It will be made up of representatives of the Irish and Irish-American business community and will be supported by a forum of those engaged in arts in New York and Ireland. It will also advise the Government on the promotion of Irish culture in New York.

Awards made on disability grounds

Two complainants were awarded €6,000 each in compensation by the Equality Tribunal in November in a case against the Minister for Education and Science, it emerged yesterday.

The complaints on disability grounds under the Equal Status Act were upheld by the tribunal. As well as the awards, the respondent was also ordered to take specified courses of action.

The Equal Status Act prohibits discrimination in all services generally available to the public, whether provided by the State or the private sector.
