Two arrested over murder of schoolboy

Police in Belfast yesterday arrested two people in connection with the murder of a 15-year-old schoolboy last year.

A man and a woman were being questioned about the murder of Thomas Devlin who was stabbed five times in the back on August 10th last year as he and two friends walked home along the Somerton Road in north Belfast.

They were returning late at night from a petrol station where they had just bought sweets.

Kenmare housing scheme rejected

A proposal for what objectors claimed was a second town in Kenmare, Co Kerry, has been turned down by Kerry County Council.

There were over 150 objections to three related planning applications for a 55-acre site immediately southwest of the town, on the area known as the peninsula.

Planning permission was being sought for 300 houses, along with town houses and apartments, retail units and car parks on the lands between the Kenmare river and Kenmare town.

Motorcyclist dies in Dublin crash

A 35-year-old motorcyclist was killed yesterday when his motorbike collided with a car in Coolock, Dublin.

A senior Garda officer is investigating reports that the motorcycle was involved in "suspicious activity" in the area before the collision.

The motorcyclist and his pillion passenger were taken to Beaumont Hospital following the accident at about 3.45pm.

The pillion passenger was treated for leg injuries.

Teenage girls rescued off Cork

Two teenage girls were last night recovering after being rescued from their inflatable toy dinghy when it started to drift out to sea off the Cork coast.

They were rescued by the Ballycotton lifeboat assisted by the LE Ciara after their dinghy had been carried about a quarter of a mile off shore in choppy seas in Ballycotton Bay at about 6.30pm.
