Gardaí talk to Australian Rules player

Gardaí in Galway have interviewed a member of the Australian team that played Ireland in the International Rules match in Salthill at the weekend.

The interview follows a complaint which alleges that the player was involved in an assault that took place in the city centre.

The Australian team is conducting an internal investigation and said it "apologises for it".

The Australian team has been in Galway since last week for the first test, which it lost, and is due to play in Croke Park, Dublin next weekend.

Family rescued in Kerry mountains

A family was rescued, cold and wet but safe after nightfall in the Kerry mountains last night.

The Kerry Mountain Rescue service reached the two adults and two children in the Torc Mountain area of Killarney.

Darkness and descending fog were hampering the search, although contact was made by mobile phone, a spokesman for the team said.

Elsewhere, in Co Wicklow mountain rescue volunteers rescued four people in three separate incidents over the weekend.

Gardaí in Southill drugs seizure

Gardaí made their second drugs seizure in the Southill area of Limerick city in two weeks.

Heroin, cocaine and ecstasy with an estimated street value of €101,000 were seized following a planned search of a house in Southill's O'Malley Park at 12.30pm yesterday.

The lunchtime raid was part of on ongoing investigation into organised crime in the Limerick area and came just two weeks after a similar seizure in Southill.

Irish speaker denies charges

The legal team representing an Irish speaker charged with disorderly behaviour in Belfast is considering applying for a judicial review, a court was told yesterday.

Marie Nic An Bhaird (24) from Woodside Walk, in Dunmurry, was to appear in Belfast Magistrate's Court charged with disorderly behaviour following an alleged incident in the Malone Road area of the city in May.

She claims that she was arrested for speaking Irish and denies the charge.
