Seven out of 10 victims are satisfied with the Garda service when reporting crimes, but fewer than four in 10 are happy with the follow-up information they receive, a study has found.

A quarter of individual crime victims and a third of organisations said they were satisfied with the outcome of their cases.

The main causes of dissatisfaction were the failure to arrest an offender in the case of violent crime, and the failure to recover property for non-violent crimes.

Nevertheless, more than nine out of 10 victims said they would be at least as likely to report a similar incident in the future, the survey says.

The report's author, Dr Dorothy Watson, said the findings showed that services to crime victims needed to be improved in a number of areas.

These include giving follow-up information on the progress and outcome of cases and supporting victims during court procedures. Dr Watson said these matters were being addressed by the revised Victims Charter published last year by the Department of Justice and the Garda Policing Plan.
